Outstanding Faculty Award - Assistant Professor, 2011
When deciding where to teach, Sarah Stitzlein chose the 91制片厂, but not for some of the reasons one might think. She chose 91制片厂 because it was the least diverse campus out of all of them. 鈥淚 wanted to teach at a university where I would have the biggest impact,鈥 she says.
Stitzlein, assistant professor of education, a core faculty member in Women鈥檚 Studies, and a fellow in the Carsey Institute, teaches students about how racism and sexism play a prominent role in today鈥檚 classrooms.
Her award-winning book, Breaking Bad Habits of Race and Gender: Transforming Identity in Schools, was the first to include both theoretical and concrete suggestions for dealing with gender and race biases in the classroom.
Stitzlein encourages both her students and teachers to have more direct and open conversations about how race and gender work in society and how they affect the lives of all students. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 want a student to say, 鈥業 don鈥檛 care if people are black, white, purple, or polka-dotted鈥擨鈥檓 color-blind.鈥 I want students to recognize differences and talk about them.鈥
She admits she had to learn through her own experience. Raised in the Midwest on a hog and cattle farm鈥攈er first car was her uncle鈥檚 Chevy Camaro鈥攕he did not engage with people of color until she went to college at Miami University in Ohio. And there, Stitzlein also noted the stark contrast between wealthy students and students who came from families who were just trying to make ends meet.
鈥淚 encourage teachers to make children uncomfortable with their racial positions, especially white students who live rather privileged lives.鈥 She also recommends that teachers help students reflect on themselves in ways that can make their habits of race and gender more flexible.
鈥淪imply put, Sarah is an excellent teacher by any measure we use,鈥 says Professor of Education Todd DeMitchell. And, he adds, it is rare to see an assistant professor with such a rich scholarly record.
鈥淚 love teaching,鈥 she says. 鈥淭here鈥檚 not a day I drag myself into the classroom. And I want my students to feel the same way.鈥 And a vast majority of her students do. Their evaluations use superlatives and many note Stitzlein鈥檚 class is the very best they鈥檝e taken at 91制片厂.

About this Award
The ideal university faculty member is someone whose accomplishments in the areas of teaching, research, and service are prodigious and of the highest quality. He or she is an inspiring, challenging, and effective teacher, whose concern and respect for students is evident both in and out of the classroom. Such a faculty member makes important and extensive contributions to his or her chosen field, and shares those contributions with peers through publication or other appropriate means. Finally, the ideal faculty member willingly and effectively devotes time and energy in useful service to the university, the profession, and the state. The recipients of these awards are those members of the university faculty who, in recent years, have demonstrated these qualities. Each year, two Outstanding Faculty Awards will be given, one each for an assistant and an associate professor. All 91制片厂 tenure track faculty members at those ranks are eligible.
