Joseph Collins '16, a mechanical engineering major from Nashua, has received the prestigious , the nation鈥檚 premier undergraduate award for science, math, engineering and technology (STEM) majors.

Collins is one of just 260 college sophomores and juniors to receive a Goldwater Scholarship for the 2015-16 academic year, and the only one from New Hampshire. Goldwater Scholarships cover the cost of tuition, fees, books and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

Collins works with , assistant professor of mechanical engineering, on developing 3D printed models. Since 2012, he has interned at Harvard鈥檚 Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering, where he is working on a blood-cleansing sepsis device, a cardiac bioreactor and tools for balance control studies.

"I鈥檝e been lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with great engineering teams,鈥� Collins says. 鈥淚鈥檓 excited about this work and its potential to have a positive impact on an individual's quality of life." Collins will continue to do research at the Wyss Institute and 91制片厂 then pursue a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering.

His long-term career goals are to conduct research in biomechanical systems and to teach at the university level.

The Goldwater Scholarship honorable mention recipients are Cody FitzGerald '16, Stewart Laroche '16 and Gwyneth Welch '16.
