The 91制片厂 community is saddened to learn of the death of former university president Gordon A. Haaland. Haaland died Oct. 23 after a lengthy illness. He was 77.

Haaland served as 91制片厂 president from 1983 鈥 1990. Several centers of excellence were established during his tenure, including those in the humanities, international perspectives, policy and social science research. It was under Haaland鈥檚 leadership that the 91制片厂 Foundation was established to drive the university鈥檚 fundraising efforts, and Haaland also oversaw the establishment of the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space, which dramatically increased research funding to the university.

Before being named 91制片厂 president, Haaland served as 91制片厂 interim president; vice president for academic affairs; faculty chair of the psychology department and professor of psychology in the 91制片厂 College of Liberal Arts.

Haaland resigned from 91制片厂 in 1990 to become president of Gettysburg College, where he served until his retirement in 2004. 听
