New tool makes 91制片厂's research and scholarship more widely discoverable

91制片厂 has launched a new tool to help share the university鈥檚 research and scholarship with the world. , which went live Monday, Nov. 26, 2018, is a public website where internal and external users can discover 91制片厂 research and scholarship across disciplines.

鈥淭he more we can make the world aware of our research and make that research accessible, the better able we are able to have a positive impact in the world.鈥

鈥淔indScholars will make the outstanding scholarly work of our faculty 鈥 work that builds and enhances 91制片厂鈥檚 reputation 鈥 widely visible,鈥 says Kevin Gardner, director of strategic initiatives in the Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Research and professor of civil and environmental engineering. FindScholars will be searchable and Google-indexed, making it easier for potential undergraduate or graduate students, collaborators, recruited faculty, funding agencies and others to connect with 91制片厂 faculty members and their scholarship.

Created with an open-source software called Vivo, FindScholars pulls faculty data from myElements, which also feeds faculty profiles on their department websites. The site presents faculty members鈥 academic publications, grants and courses taught, as well as additional keywords and profile information.

Several years in the making, FindScholars is deployed and managed by 91制片厂鈥檚 academic technology group in close collaboration with the research information technology group. Academic technology has prepared a checklist to help faculty prepare and enhance their profiles.

鈥淚 am proud of the efforts of the staff in academic technology and research information technology to present the research and scholarship of 91制片厂 faculty to the public. I appreciate the feedback provided by faculty to improve this first version of the site. We have a roadmap to continue to address faculty feedback with version two of the site in the new year,鈥 says Terri Winters, assistant vice provost for academic technology. That office is offering multiple opportunities for additional support, including in Dimond Library, or department meeting or department-specific support.

FindScholars extends 91制片厂鈥檚 land-, sea- and space-grant mission, says Gardner. 鈥淥ur publicly funded university and publicly funded research should be in the public domain, and this helps us achieve that. The more we can make the world aware of our research and make that research accessible, the better able we are able to have a positive impact in the world.鈥
