Applying to college can be overwhelming鈥攅specially when it comes time to complete the dreaded essay.听The essay is your opportunity to bring your application to life and let the admissions team get to know you. While it can seem like a daunting task, here are some tips and tricks to help you write an effective and memorable college essay.听

  1. Choose听a topic you鈥檙e connected to.听Your essay is a chance to show who you are beyond听your grades and test scores. After looking at the essay prompts, brainstorm ideas and really think about what is important in your life.听What are you passionate about? What鈥檚 your听proudest听moment? What听barriers have you had in your life, and how did you overcome them?听Use your experiences鈥攊nside and outside the classroom鈥攖o听showcase听why you鈥檙e a great fit for the college.听
  2. Make an outline.听An outline is a great tool to organize your thoughts and ideas into one concise page. It鈥檚 important to keep rules for your essay, like wordcount听and topic points, in mind听throughout the planning process. With听an outline,听you鈥檒l be sure to have an essay that is well-structured, interesting听and听on-topic.听
  3. Be听honest.听Just like when you submit anything else, you don鈥檛 want to fill out your essay with something that isn鈥檛 true. This essay is something that shows what makes you 鈥榶ou鈥. Your passions. Your struggles. The experiences that have brought you to this moment and goal of getting into college. Use what you鈥檝e done and learned to make your essay stand out.听
  4. Let your creativity flow.听Colleges receive thousands of applications, which means they read thousands of similar essays. Don鈥檛 be afraid to really write about a topic that鈥檚 outside the box! Even if it鈥檚 about something as small as the first time you had a butterfly land on your nose or that one time you had to figure out how to change a tire in the rain. As long as the topic is true to you,听it can be a great college essay topic.听
  5. Edit thoroughly and ask for听feedback.听While it can be excruciating, it鈥檚 extremely important to edit your essay to make sure it鈥檚 in tip-top shape. You don鈥檛 want an admissions counselor to see that you wrote 鈥渄efiantly鈥 instead of 鈥渄efinitely鈥 or 鈥渒eep clam鈥 when you meant to say 鈥渒eep calm鈥濃攖hese mistakes can potentially make or break your chances of being accepted. Take a day-long break after your initial edit, then read it again with fresh eyes,听out loud,听to spot any听spelling and grammar errors听you may have missed.听It helps to听ask a friend,听parent听and/or teacher for feedback to make sure you effectively get your points across.听
