The data is seemingly everywhere. On the front page of newspapers around the country. Slowly crawling along the ticker of cable news channels. Blasted out on social media at an increasingly rapid rate. As the 2024 presidential election draws closer, political poll information has become truly ubiquitous.
But prevalence and accuracy are two entirely different things, says 91制片厂 expert Andrew Smith. And he recommends employing a healthy dose of skepticism when viewing poll results ahead of the big day.
We all 鈥渨ant to know what the score is,鈥 Smith admits, and polls are an easily digestible and readily available medium. But while they continue to spark heated debate among commentators and community members alike, they aren鈥檛 necessarily painting a particularly accurate picture of the...

Simmering tension between New Hampshire state leadership and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) over the Granite State鈥檚 first-in-the-nation primary election recently bubbled over, with the New Hampshire Attorney General鈥檚 Office aiming a cease-and-desist letter at the DNC after the national party referred to the Jan. 23 state democratic primary as 鈥渕eaningless.鈥
The dispute centers around a decision by the DNC to make South Carolina the first state to hold a primary in the 2024 presidential campaign cycle. New Hampshire 鈥 which has held the first primary in each presidential cycle dating back to 1920 鈥 has remained firm in its position that it would not budge from the first spot, citing a state law that went into effect more than 40 years ago. That prompted the DNC鈥檚 dig that such a...

Amusingly enough given that his professional focus is pinpointing poll numbers as precisely as possible, in the runup to New Hampshire鈥檚 first-in-the-nation primary every four years, Andrew Smith, director of the 91制片厂 Survey Center, is inundated with so many media requests he doesn鈥檛 even try to calculate them.
鈥淚 give up on counting the number of media hits I鈥檓 involved with during that stretch 鈥 it鈥檚 in the hundreds during those two or three weeks leading up to and right after the primary,鈥 Smith says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a tremendous boost to the university鈥檚 visibility.鈥
That boost comes thanks to the survey center鈥檚 sterling reputation forged over several decades, and the fact that the primary routinely puts both its Granite State Poll and Smith squarely in the limelight at a time when so much of...

Gun control. Abortion. The death penalty. You wouldn鈥檛 be alone in assuming that these are the hot-button issues that create the widest philosophical and political divide between Republicans and Democrats. But survey data released in May from 91制片厂鈥檚 Carsey School of Public Policy yielded some surprising results: Democrats and Republicans are actually farther apart on their beliefs about climate change than on any of these other familiar political third rails.
鈥淐limate change has become one of the most divisive questions we ask on the polls. That鈥檚 a change,鈥 says report author Lawrence Hamilton, who is a professor of sociology and senior fellow at the Carsey School. A whopping 53 percentage points separate Democrats and Republicans on questions about whether and why climate change is...

On Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012, the Board of Trustees which officially determines our state appropriation request and tuition levels-voted in support of asking lawmakers to restore the 2010 budget cut of 49 percent in exchange for 91制片厂 providing more financial aid and freezing tuition for New Hampshire students for two years. This is a position that 71 percent of New Hampshire adults support, according to a recent poll from the 91制片厂 Survey Center. I hope you will join me in making sure our elected officials and those seeking to serve understand the need to prioritize funding for 91制片厂 and public higher education.
