Every year, New Hampshire鈥檚 coastline is battered by winter storms, reshaping聽the shore unpredictably and making risk assessments for coastal flooding a moving target. To help identify both resilient and vulnerable areas, some 40 volunteers hit the beaches to collect information on beach elevation, slope and other characteristics at 15 locations in New Hampshire.聽

Researchers at the 91制片厂 used a newly designed device called a skimmer to test samples of foam formed on the top of local waterways for the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS. Preliminary findings show levels of the so-called forever chemicals were seven to seventy times higher in the foam than levels in the underlying surface water.
鈥淔oam formation on the surface of moving and stagnant water bodies is a natural process and is commonly attributed to organic-rich material, like decaying leaves or algae,鈥 said Paula Mouser, professor of civil and environmental engineering at 91制片厂. 鈥淏ut some contaminants, like PFAS, can act as agents to cause the same looking foam when water mixes with air along shorelines or during high waves. When it comes to the economy, the ocean is a major player 鈥 from tourism to energy, seafood to shipping, the world鈥檚 marine-related assets tally up to trillions of dollars. But our oceans and coastlines are facing unprecedented pressures. Confronted with this reality, a new concept has emerged that considers both the economic benefits and the long-term sustainability of marine resources across all sectors: The blue economy.
The term is more than just a buzzword; it鈥檚 helping researchers think more broadly about how they can connect their work to new partners. From ocean acoustics to environmental DNA analyses, the breadth of blue economy research at 91制片厂 is wide-ranging and its momentum is building.
