Among the first things to land on the desk of Rachel Stewart as they settled into a new role as director of 91制片厂鈥檚 Sexual Harassment & Rape Prevention Program (SHARPP) in October 2022 was a formidably thick manilla folder simply labeled 鈥淣ame Change.鈥
鈥淚n it was pages of feedback from previous staff teams who had begun the conversation about our name but never gotten anywhere with it,鈥 Stewart says.
As of Aug. 9, that folder can officially get filed as complete. Following an in-depth program review and years of discussion around how to represent the program鈥檚 important history while arriving at a name that best serves the university community, SHARPP has officially rebranded as The聽SHARPP聽Center for Interpersonal Violence Awareness, Prevention, and Advocacy.

The spring semester is particularly important at SHARPP because Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) is observed in April. Let鈥檚 talk about what SAAM is all about. It focuses on educating and raising awareness around sexual violence, as well as supporting, amplifying and uplifting survivors of interpersonal violence.

This April marks the 20th official Sexual Assault Awareness Month, though activists have been working to raise awareness of this issue for even longer. Why do we focus on awareness? Why is it important that the average person learn more about the issue of sexual assault and interpersonal violence? Essentially, awareness is so important because sexual violence does not exist in a vacuum. Anyone can be impacted by it, and there is a cultural component contributing not only to the violence, but also to how people react to it. If we wish to prevent sexual assaults, then the general public needs adequate and accurate information.
Another important aspect of raising awareness around sexual violence is giving people information that will allow them to treat survivors in more compassionate and...

What COVID-19 Can Teach Us: Violence and Marginalization

The disproportionate impact of the pandemic on certain populations has highlighted numerous disparities and injustices in our society. On the surface, a disease does not discriminate. However, it's not hard to see that some groups may find it more difficult to take health precautions, are less likely to be tested, and will not receive the same quality of treatment if they do end up with COVID-19. A parallel can be drawn between the disproportionate impacts of the pandemic and the ways in which interpersonal violence (sexual violence, relationship abuse, and stalking) can affect marginalized communities.
For example, low-income people undoubtedly face more risk of being infected with COVID, given that they are more likely to have crowded living conditions, are less likely to be able to...

These next few weeks of online classes and social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19 will be difficult for all of us. But social distancing can be especially difficult for survivors in our community. For those living in abusive households, abusers could take advantage of this social distancing period to gain further control over their victims, leaving survivors feeling trapped with no way out. Social distancing - staying inside, not seeing friends or family聽and spending long periods of time in isolation - can also be difficult for survivors with mental health concerns.
We want to remind the community that confidential SHARPP services are still available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via our help line: (603) 862-7233. Our ask-an-advocate online service is also available. Our...

National estimates tell us that one in five聽women and one聽in 16 men are sexually assaulted while in college.
At 91制片厂 specifically, a recent climate survey reveals that 13% of all college students have had an unwanted sexual contact or interaction. That means that right now, there are over 2,000 student survivors between all of 91制片厂鈥檚 campuses.

Our Favorite Television Characters Are Still Stalkers

Stalking. It鈥檚 a classic trope that can be traced back to classic Hollywood films: boy meets girl, girl rejects boy, boy just sees this as 鈥減laying hard to get.鈥 So he follows her around, continues to ask her out, plays music outside of her window, lies in order to get closer to her. And finally after his relentless pursuit, she finally gives in. Because in the romantic comedy universe,聽 鈥渘o鈥 doesn鈥檛 mean 鈥渘o,鈥 it鈥檚 simply flirtation encouraging the boy to try harder: 鈥渃onvince me.鈥 If he just shows her how much he likes her, she will eventually come to her senses and give in.
Real love isn鈥檛 like this, but media is trying to teach us that it is. According to a study by Julia Lippman of the University of Michigan, stalking behaviors are made to seem normal or even romantic in television...

In the last few years, we鈥檝e seen a dramatic rise in the amount of attention being paid to sexual harassment and assault. Some say the new era of believing came with the arrest of Bill Cosby, a man some saw as TV鈥檚 鈥渕odel of fatherhood,鈥 who sexually assaulted as many as 50 women (only those who have come forward with their stories).
Then came allegations against Harvey Weinstein, who paid off numerous women he assaulted and harassed dating back to the 1990s (typo here?). It was this case that helped ignite the #MeToo movement 鈥 a phrase coined years earlier by Tarana Burke 鈥 which continues today through the Time鈥檚 Up legal defense fund and other forms of activism.
As these issues slowly seeped into the mainstream, other forms of media hopped onto the topic too: in 2019, we have a wealth...

As someone who has worked for SHARPP for the past three years, a question I鈥檝e gotten pretty frequently, to my surprise, has been: if someone is raped, assaulted, or experiencing abuse, why don鈥檛 they just go to the police?
Although there are聽a whole host of reasons, including but not exclusive to: people not recognizing that鈥檚 an option for them, people seeking support from loved ones instead of through legal avenues, and at times certain marginalized populations might not have trustworthy or safe relationships or experiences with police. One of the primary reasons that survivors don鈥檛 seek out the police in the aftermath of violence is that they don鈥檛 think they will be believed.
The criminal justice system is one that, unfortunately, often fails survivors of interpersonal violence. It...
