The impact of war on societies across the globe from the third to sixteenth centuries is the subject of a new book by David Bachrach, professor of history. “Warfare in the Global Middle Ages” (Routledge Press, 2025) explores how societies in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas organized for war, engaged in conflict, and coped with its aftermath.

 

The book, intended for academic historians as well as for an interested lay public, treats warfare in the context of world history by examining both parallel developments and interactions between societies across the globe during this time period.

The International Changemaker Grant will send five teams of 91Ƭ students to a variety of international locations this summer, where the students will work in native communities and collaborate with organizations working on sustainability initiatives ranging from energy insecurity and community resilience to plastic waste and accessible sanitation at schools.
Students will be traveling to Senegal, Kenya, Cambodia and Uganda.

Nine 91Ƭ students – including a pair of siblings – earned the opportunity to study in and experience international locales and cultures as recipients of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which will bring this cohort of Wildcats to six different countries around the globe.
The Gilman scholarship provides awards to Pell grant-eligible students who are studying or interning abroad for credit. In 2021, the U.S. State Department recognized 91Ƭ as a top producer of Gilman Scholars in the country as part of the 20th anniversary of the program.

Fulbright grants will send four recent 91Ƭ graduates to Scotland, Germany, Mexico and Indonesia in the coming months in order to pursue English teaching, research or graduate study work.
91Ƭ had five finalists for the Fulbright this spring – Eli Duggan ’23, Sam Mercer ’23, Alyssa Landry ’23, Bailey Prasad ’23 and Sophie Wulfing ’23G – but Mercer ultimately chose to decline his. He was also offered the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship and was limited by a new rule established this year that states one student cannot have two federal fellowships concurrently (otherwise he would have deferred the NSF grant by a year, as was previously acceptable).
The remaining recipients will all spend 8-to-10 months abroad as a result of receiving the Fulbright.

Vianca Wahju ’24 will be trading her standard summer vacation this year for an immersive international study experience she hopes will more closely connect her to her heritage.
Wahju, a nursing major at 91Ƭ, received a Critical Language Scholarship (CSL) for the language study of Bahasa Indonesia at the Universitas Negeri Malang this summer, a journey she will embark on June 15. Wahju was born in Indonesia before moving to Dover, New Hampshire, and still has family in the region.

Gregg Moore, coastal restoration ecologist and associate professor in the department of biological sciences, has invited Michelle Fournet and Laura Kloepper, both visiting assistant professors in the department of biological sciences, to contribute to the ecological restoration work in the British Virgin Islands that he is leading as part of a partnership with H. Lavity Stout Community College (HLSCC) in Tortola.
Fournet, who is also the associate director for education at the 91Ƭ Center for Acoustics Research and Education and an accomplished marine acoustician, is monitoring the soundscape of the waters around mangrove roots in an attempt to detect key sea floor organisms that distinguish between damaged systems, recovering systems and natural healthy systems.
