U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen welcomed participants to 91制片厂's National Lab Day.

Dozens of representatives from the U.S. Department of Energy鈥檚 National Laboratories visited 91制片厂 this week to forge new connections and strengthen existing ones between 91制片厂 researchers and their 17 world-class facilities. In all, more than 200 91制片厂 faculty members and students, researchers from regional universities and businesses and National Lab personnel attended the first-ever 91制片厂 National Lab Day October 27 and 28.

Improved fuel efficiency of automobiles and aircraft depends, in part, on lighter, stronger materials. But how do you create those materials, and how do you know when they鈥檒l fail? To help him answer those questions, the National Science Foundation聽has awarded Marko Knezevic a CAREER award.
Knezevic, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at 91制片厂, is particularly interested in materials such as titanium and magnesium alloys, both strong, lightweight metals with a hexagonal structure. 鈥淭hey have the potential for reducing weight in both aerospace and automotive industries,鈥 he says. 鈥淏ut industry hasn鈥檛 been adopting much of them mainly because their fracture behavior is not well understood.鈥

91制片厂 will join more than 100 partners from industry, academia and government in a new Department of Energy institute focused on the reduction of energy and emissions through more efficient material use, reuse, recycling and remanufacturing. The Reducing Embodied-energy and Decreasing Emissions (REMADE) Institute, headquartered in Rochester, New York, will leverage up to $70 million in federal funding matched by $70 million in private cost-share commitments.

91制片厂鈥檚 first-ever Aerospace and Defense Technology Day on Nov. 4 was part open house, part show-and-tell, part speed dating 鈥 and, according to the organizers, full success.
The day brought 70 aerospace and defense industry representatives to meet with dozens of 91制片厂 faculty whose research aligns with their businesses. Activities included a research 鈥渟andpit鈥 鈥 a highly interactive meet-and-greet session 鈥 as well as an expo of 91制片厂 research centers and business resources.
鈥淲e received wonderful feedback from both faculty and industry attendees about connections they made throughout the day that will hopefully lead to new partnerships,鈥 says Ellen Christo, director of strategic partnerships with 91制片厂Innovation, which hosted the event. 鈥淚 kept hearing 鈥榃ow, I had no idea 91制片厂 had this.鈥欌

91制片厂 has established three new research centers that will leverage the university鈥檚 existing strengths to enhance interdisciplinary research opportunities for faculty and students聽鈥斅爐he聽Prevention Innovations: Research and Practice for Ending Violence Against Women Research Center;聽the Center for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Innovations (CAMMI), and聽the 91制片厂 Center for Infrastructure Resilience to Climate.
Each new center, selected by the Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Research via an internal grant initiative, will receive $200,000 to boost its ability to compete for federal, state and private grants and contracts that support innovative research and scholarship.
