Reseach published by Jessica Carson, an assistant research professor at the Carsey School, found that in the nation's听199 rural counties听where seasonal housing accounts for 25% or more of all housing units,听the average number of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people is more than twice as high as in other rural counties. In efforts to discourage snowbirds and out-of-staters from flocking to their second homes in these counties, states have closed some public recreations sites, as well as public facilities and parking lots.听
