Student veterans are a diverse group of ambitious, results-driven individuals鈥攄rawn to higher education for different reasons, but with the shared mission of achieving their academic and professional goals. In honor of Veterans Day, we spoke with U.S. Marine Corps veteran and听听Michael Evers '23 about his college experience.

In which branch of the military did you serve?

I served in the United States Marine Corps. My Military Occupational Specialty was 0861 - Fire Support Marine and I was billeted as a Joint Fires Observer (JFO). I did two deployments, one of which included Operation Inherent Resolve.

How do you apply your military experience to your education?

I use some skills I learned like priorities of work and time management towards my education. When I was applying to college, I figured I鈥檇 do things much differently than I did when I went through high school, so I鈥檝e been trying to cut back on procrastinating (which is easier said than done). I also like to participate in my classes, and even if I don鈥檛 have a question I ask because I know some people may be a bit nervous to. I think I was also taught how to manage my stress in a good way.

How has your experience in the military and in college听prepared you for your future?

I think I鈥檝e been put at an advantageous position where both my military experience and current experience at 91制片厂 Manchester have set me up for nothing听but success.听 I鈥檓 blown away by all the resources I have as a student, and even when I become an alumni. I鈥檓 forever grateful.

What are your hopes for after graduation?

When I started college, I was gearing myself towards a career in law enforcement, but since I鈥檝e been a student, I鈥檝e now widened my view on potential careers I would like. I鈥檝e started to consider working for BAE, potentially, or other companies. It鈥檚 amazing how your thoughts change the more you learn.

What would you like people to know about the life of a student veteran?

We are just like everyone else鈥攏o better, no worse鈥攁nd if you鈥檙e struggling or need some sort of advice, take it. I鈥檓 always happy and here to help someone if I鈥檓 asked or feel that I can do something to make someone鈥檚 life a little easier.

What advice would you give to veterans who are thinking about pursuing a college education?

Do it. You earned your benefits, don鈥檛 let this opportunity go to waste! You will not regret it. It鈥檚 worth it.
