
Come learn about home gardening, landscaping, current research, and other growing information at the 91制片厂 Greenhouse Open House at the Macfarlane Research Greenhouses Friday, March 23, and Saturday, March 24, 2018. The greenhouses will be open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. both days. The event is free and open to the public.
A facility of the听, the provide a venue for 91制片厂 faculty, staff and students to present colorful displays and educational lectures of interest to home gardeners, greenhouse producers, and landscapers. Visitors will learn about bee-friendly gardens and landscapes, cooking with spring greens, development of new economically valuable crop species for Northern New England, status and issues in plant biotechnology, and a home gardening Q&A with extension specialists. The 91制片厂 Thompson School will display garden show-quality landscape options with a focus on water features.
The 91制片厂 Plant Diagnostic Lab and Cooperative Extension Plant Health Program will have a display on common diseases and problems of garden and landscape plants. Attendees are encouraged to come with questions about plant health problems. 91制片厂 experts and Master Gardeners will be on hand to help get gardens off to a great start. On Friday and Saturday tours will be scheduled of both the Macfarlane Research Greenhouses and the听91制片厂 high tunnels, two greenhouse-style structures associated with the Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems program where students produce greens for on-campus consumption.
Other open house activities include the 91制片厂 Thompson School Flower Show and Plant Sale. The Greenhouse Caf茅 will serve coffee, lunch, and delicious homemade treats. The caf茅, hosted by the Thompson School Horticultural Club, helps fund the club鈥檚 spring trip to Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania.
On Saturday, March 24, the 91制片厂 Greenhouse Open House coincides with the听Seacoast Home and Garden Show at the Whittemore Center. This year the Thompson School Flower Show and Plant Sale continues Sunday, March 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. along with the Home and Garden Show. Please note that the 91制片厂 Macfarlane Research Greenhouses and associated displays will be closed March 25.
The 91制片厂 Macfarlane Research Greenhouses are located off Main Street on the west end of Durham. Seminars will take place in Putnam Hall across the parking lot from the greenhouses.听On Friday, metered parking is available at the 91制片厂 Visitor Center across from the greenhouses; parking on Saturday and Sunday is free. Handicap parking spaces and short-term parking for plant pickup will be available near the main greenhouse entrance. The greenhouses are also served by Wildcat Transit鈥檚 shuttle service:听/transportation/wildcat-transit.
