91制片厂 Cooperative Extension celebrated its one-hundredth birthday alongside Governor Maggie Hassan, 91制片厂 President Mark Huddleston, lawmakers, state commissioners, county officials, and Extension volunteers and clientele on May 7 during a ceremony in the Executive Council Chambers at the State House in Concord.
Extension Dean and Director John Pike said, 鈥淲e鈥檙e here today because tomorrow鈥擬ay 8鈥攎arks the one-hundredth anniversary of the federal act that created Cooperative Extension nationwide.鈥
He was referring to the Smith-Lever Act of 1914, which called for the nation鈥檚 land-grant universities to create an outreach arm dedicated to educating the citizens of the state for the public good鈥攖he Cooperative Extension System.
Pike thanked representatives from the state鈥檚 congressional delegation and members of the New Hampshire legislature for being present at the ceremony. He also thanked State Reps. Robert Haefner and Robert Theberge for their service on Extension鈥檚 centennial planning committee and their continuous support of 91制片厂 Cooperative Extension.
鈥淵ou are the ones who help bring 91制片厂 Cooperative Extension services to the people of the state where they work and live,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e could not do our important work without you, and we are grateful to see many of you here today.鈥
Celina Walker, a 4-H member and high-school senior from Pelham, spoke about how the 4-H program has shaped her.
鈥淚 always strive to be better,鈥 Walker said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 the 4-H way.鈥
91制片厂 President Mark Huddleston described Extension鈥檚 work as inspirational, saying it gives 鈥渞eal expression鈥 to its sense of commitment to the public welfare.
During her remarks, Governor Hassan cited several examples of Extension鈥檚 work in food and agriculture, natural resources, community and economic development, and 4-H, youth, and family development, saying that 鈥淓xtension is always focused on the greater common vision,鈥 and the work is a 鈥渒ey value鈥 in a state that values education.
Governor Hassan closed the ceremony with the reading of a commendation to commemorate the anniversary.
Extension 鈥榮 exhibit commemorating its听one-hundredth year of work in New Hampshire, 鈥淏ringing the University to You: A Century of Service to the Granite State,鈥 will be on display through June 30 at the N.H. State Library in Concord.
