John H. Smith, President Mark Huddleston and David Finklehor

An internationally known 91Ƭ professor and a generous alumni benefactor recently received the 91Ƭ’s most prestigious awards for their support of and service to the university. During a campus celebration on September 25, John H. “Jack” Smith ’50 was presented with the 91Ƭ Foundation’s Hubbard Family Award for Service to Philanthropy, the university’s highest honor to recognize philanthropic leadership and gifts. David Finklehor, professor of sociology and founder and director of the Crimes Against Children Research Center, received the Charles Holmes Pettee Medal, which honors individuals whose life work reflects exceptional service to the state, nation or world. Of this year’s two highly lauded honorees — Smith has been honored previously with the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award and the Alumni Meritorious Service Award, and Finkelhor is one of only four faculty members to be designated a University Professor, 91Ƭ’s highest academic distinction — 91Ƭ President Mark Huddleston says, “They have been selected for these prestigious awards because they represent the highest qualities of character and passion in their longstanding service to and support of this great university.”
