Serita Frey, professor in the 91制片厂 Department of Natural Resources and the Environment, was selected as the winner of the 2025 Excellence in Research Award given out during the annual Faculty Excellence celebration this听fall. Frey's work has been lauded by colleagues and students alike, with one nominator saying she "has fundamentally changed how we think about soil." Tvisha Martin, a postdoctoral fellow, adds that she has made "groundbreaking discoveries in the realm of soil ecology."

And who better to ask for tips on how to stay warm during the winter than someone who works outside in the Arctic?听Cheristy Jones has spent a total of 12 months doing fieldwork in Greenland, Alaska, and northern Sweden during her Ph.D. at 91制片厂. Her research looks at greenhouse gasses in Arctic landscapes and waterways, specifically carbon dioxide and methane.

We spoke with Radim Bartos, professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science at 91制片厂, about how artificial intelligence is transforming the computing landscape 鈥� and what this rapid evolution means for innovation, education at 91制片厂, and society at large.

91制片厂 scientists and students designed and built 10 space instruments to study atmospheric phenomena that affect satellites and GPS communications.

Get to know听John (Jack) Mayer, the recipient of 91制片厂's听2025 Distinguished Professor Award, given out during 91制片厂's annual Faculty Excellence celebration in November. Mayer was referred to as a "bit of a rock star" by a colleague in his nomination, lauded for his dedication to students and down-to-earth demeanor.听

"As a teacher, he has a lot of diverse ideas, and he really promotes a lot of broad exploration," says Beth Caldwell, senior lecturer in psychology.

The 91制片厂 has received a five-year TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) grant totaling $1.975 million from the U.S. Department of Education to provide support to low-income, first-generation and disabled students as a part of 91制片厂鈥檚 TRIO SSS program.

Mikaela Belanger 鈥�26 knows better than most how dramatically life can change in the blink of an eye.

For years, she dreamed of saving enough to purchase her mother a house, only to wind up without a home herself when her mom abruptly kicked her out of the apartment they shared following a mental health episode almost exactly one year ago.

Just like that, she went from serving as her mother鈥檚 primary caretaker through a battle with cancer to facing off with her across a courtroom.
