Handshake for Volunteer Organizations

Career and Professional Success offers volunteer organizations (on and off campus) a free and effective portal to advertise opportunities,鈥痮n-campus鈥痑nd virtual activities鈥痶o all our鈥痵tudents and recent graduates. It does not allow organizations to manage volunteers or track hours. We suggest organizations use a free resource similar to, to manage volunteers. 

Volunteer roles must provide students with a clear educational, professional, skill-building, or community service benefit. Opportunities that are primarily unpaid work without these elements will not be approved. You can review 91制片厂鈥檚 full recruiting and posting policies here.

Step-by-Step Guide 

1. Creating an Employer Account 

  1. Go to Handshake Login and choose 鈥淓mployers鈥  

  1. Register using your official .edu or organization email 

  1. Confirm your email via the message from Handshake 

  1. If your organization already exists, request to join. Otherwise, follow prompts to create a new company profile  

  1. Await approval from  

 

2. Posting a Volunteer Position 

Once approved as an employer on Handshake: 

  1. Navigate to Jobs 鈫 click Create Job  

  1. In the Position Type dropdown, pick Other 鈫 then select Volunteer as the role type  

  1. In the Basic Info section:  

  1. Craft a clear title (e.g., 鈥淰olunteer 鈥 Title鈥) 

  1. Specify 鈥淰olunteer鈥 under Position Type 

  1. Fill in location (on-site, remote, or hybrid) and volunteer time commitment (e.g., part-time, hours/week) 

  1. In Compensation & Benefits:  

  1. Choose Unpaid 

  1. Confirm it's an unpaid volunteer 

  1. Add a detailed description:  

  1. Emphasize mission, responsibilities, skills gained, and any required qualifications (GPA, experience, etc.) 

  1. Define candidate preferences:  

  1. Select relevant majors, class years, etc., to target the right students  

  1. Choose schools to post to 鈥 select your university or other partner institutions 

  1. Set application dates, number of volunteers needed, and application process (On Handshake or external) 

  1. Define required application materials (resume, cover letter) 

  1. Review and click Post 

  

3. Tips for Visibility & Clarity 

  • Title: Include 鈥淰olunteer鈥 at the start (鈥淰olunteer 鈥 X Role鈥). 

  • Position Type: Must explicitly be 鈥淰olunteer鈥 in Handshake. 

  • Compensation: Mark unpaid and confirm. 

  • Description: State its volunteer work, mention skills, benefits, and time commitment. 

  • Screening & Preferences: Add clear expectations to manage applicant fit.
