The Hollings Scholarship Program awards successful undergraduate applicants with monetary assistance toward two years of full-time study and a paid summer internship at a NOAA facility. The internship provides Scholars with hands-on, practical experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities. Scholars also attend a mandatory NOAA Scholarship Program orientation and the annual Science & Education Symposium, a scientific conference where students present their research.

Value: Academic assistance (up to $9,500 per year) for two years of full-time study; A 10-week, full-time paid ($700/week) summer internship at a NOAA facility; Travel funds to attend Program Orientation and S&E Symposium; Housing subsidy for scholars who do not reside at home during the summer internship.
Eligibility: US Citizenship; be a full-time second year student in a four-year undergraduate program OR a full-time third year student in a five-year undergraduate program; earn and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent on another identified scale) each term, as well as an overall GPA of 3.0 in your major field of study; have and maintain a declared major in a discipline that supports NOAA’s programs and missions.
Major: Oceanic, environmental, biological, and atmospheric sciences, mathematics, engineering, remote sensing technology, computer and information science, physical and social sciences including geography, physics, hydrology, geomatics, or teacher education that supports NOAA’s programs and missions.

- By October 28: Create an application & Send first draft of Essays A & B (see below)

- By November 18: Ask recommenders for Letters of Recommendation. If you need a letter from your Department Chair or Academic Advisor regarding your student status, you should ask them for that now, too!
