When a student chooses to live on campus, they are committing to either a full academic year (fall and spring semesters) or just a spring semester housing assignment. The Room and Board Agreement, which students agree to as part of the online housing application, clearly states this as part of the terms of living on campus.
- Students who have a fall semester housing assignment: Have a full academic year commitment (fall and spring semesters)
- Students who have only a spring semester (no fall semester) housing assignment: Have only a spring semester commitment
We recognize that there may be times when a student needs to cancel their on-campus housing. All cancellation requests must be submitted the online Housing Portal. All cancellations are subject to cancellation fees, as noted in the Room & Board Agreement and on this website. Please read the cancellation information and process thoroughly.
If you are looking to request an exemption for the On-Campus Housing Requirement, please visit the housing requirement webpage.
Types of Cancellation
There are two types of cancellation - approved and non-approved. Each type is subject to its own cancellation schedule of fees and refunds.
Non-Approved Cancellations
A non-approved cancellation means that the reason for cancelling housing does not meet one of the pre-approved grounds for cancellation.
Approved Cancellations
An approved cancellation means that the reason for cancelling housing meets one of the pre-approved grounds for cancellation.
Non-Approved Cancellations

Approved Cancellations

- Internship – For students participating in an internship, during the semester(s) in which they are requesting to cancel, that is for 91ÖÆƬ³§ credit and at a distance that would prohibit living in campus housing. Student is responsible for ensuring that verification of internship is submitted to Housing & Residential Life by the appropriate University department.
- Leave of Absence or Official University Withdrawal – For students taking a leave of absence from 91ÖÆƬ³§ or withdrawing from the university during the semester(s) in which they are requesting to cancel. The Registrar’s office will automatically alert Housing & Residential Life when a leave/withdrawal is processed.
- 91ÖÆƬ³§ Sponsored Study Abroad/Away – For students participating in a university sponsored program study abroad/away program during the semester(s) in which they are requesting to cancel. Confirmation of participation in study abroad/away program is required.
- Academic Suspension/Dismissal – Housing & Residential Life is notified by the Registrar's office when a student is academically suspended or dismissed from 91ÖÆƬ³§.

Cancellation FAQs
Once a cancellation request is received, it will be reviewed by Housing & Residential Life staff. There are a few different responses that a student can receive. All decisions and responses are sent by 91ÖÆƬ³§ email. It is the responsibility of the student to monitor their 91ÖÆƬ³§ email and respond, if appropriate, in a timely fashion.
- Request completed (non-approved cancellation): Review of the request determined that the reason provided is considered non-approved. The student's housing will be cancelled, and the non-approved cancellation fee/refund schedule will apply.
- Request completed (approved cancellation): Review of the request determined that the reason provided is considered approved. The student's housing will be cancelled, and the approved cancellation fee/refund schedule will apply.
- Request denied: Review of the request determined that the student is not able to cancel housing for the reason they listed. Housing is not cancelled in this case, and the student is able to resubmit under a different reason or discuss further with Housing & Residential Life.
It’s not quite that simple. The Room & Board Agreement is not transferrable, meaning we do not transfer your commitment to another student. Additionally, we do not always have a waitlist of students wanting on-campus housing. It is very important that we maintain occupancy levels in order to meet our budgetary requirements and keep housing rates as low as possible.
No, you will not be released from the Room & Board Agreement in order to move to a fraternity or sorority house. 91ÖÆƬ³§'s Fraternity & Sorority Life office and FSL organizations are aware of this policy.
At this time, part-time students are welcome to apply for on-campus housing! Please note the following important details for part-time students:
- If you are a full-time student for the Fall Semester and become a part-time student in the Spring semester, this does not automatically release you from your housing commitment. If you are changing to a part time status student, please contact Housing & Residential Life to discuss this change.
- If occupancy projections anticipate a high need for on-campus housing for full-time students, part-time students may be placed on the waitlist and will be offered space according to waitlist protocols.
If you have circumstances that you believe will prevent you from meeting any due dates, please contact Housing to discuss your situation.
