Field Study in American Sign Language

Kaitlyn Mastacouris and Ari Nadeau have spent several hours each week of their senior year at听 Krempels Center, a community program in Portsmouth, N.H., for adults living with acquired brain injury. The ASL/English Interpreting students are paired with Claire, a member of the community who is Deaf but had been communicating via lip reading. The pair have provided interpreting while also learning from Claire as they go.

After a year and a half in a teacher preparation program, it was an introductory American Sign Language (ASL) course that inspired Shayla Radcliffe (Gannon) '15 to change her career path. Now, the ASL/English Interpreting alumna brings her passion to her work as a staff interpreter at The Children鈥檚 Center for Communication 鈥 Beverly School for the Deaf.
