Research published by Jessica Carson of the Carsey School found that in the nation's听199 rural counties听where seasonal housing accounts for 25% or more of all housing units,听the average number of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people is more than twice as high as in other rural counties. In efforts to discourage snowbirds and out-of-staters from flocking to their second homes in these counties, states have closed some public recreations sites, as well as public facilities and parking lots.

Data collected by Kenneth Johnson, senior demographer at the Carsey School, has been used to examine racial disparities present in health care during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Johnson, this data offers the best estimates "on what the population of New Hampshire looks like."

The Carsey School has been responding to the COVID-19 pandemic by conducting and publishing research on new and emerging trends related to coronavirus, helping in the policy response, and by assisting communities to safely continue civic life during this period of individual isolation.

Senior Demographer at the Carsey School Ken Johnson offers some insight into increased tensions between residents of rural vacation locals and the non-residents who are flocking to seasonal/vacation听homes in these regions to avoid coronvirus-stricken metropolitan areas.

According to Jessica Carson, an assistant research professor at the Carsey School, seasonal听homes in New Hampshire account for more than 10% of all housing units, a proportion topped by only Maine at 16.4% and Vermont at 15.6%. More than 46,000 of the estimated 66,000 seasonal homes are in Belknap, Carroll, Coos, and Grafton counties. This is raising concerns within the community as to what will happen when these homes are filled by outsiders during the summer.听
