Kenneth Johnson, senior demographer at the Carsey School, says that the risks of suffering from a severe COVID-19 infection are higher in听rural America based on age and access to health care.听

Every year on April 22, 91制片厂 joins people and organizations around the world to celebrate Earth Day. This feels more meaningful as the urgency of action to address the climate crisis becomes more apparent to us all.

Jenni Cook, associate dean of the , likens it to a performance. A half-hour prior to going live, there鈥檚 a mic check and a chance for everyone to get comfortable with the format.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a little bit nerve-wracking,鈥� Cook says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the performer in me that wants to over-prepare.鈥�

Reseach published by Jessica Carson, an assistant research professor at the Carsey School, found that in the nation's听199 rural counties听where seasonal housing accounts for 25% or more of all housing units,听the average number of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people is more than twice as high as in other rural counties. In efforts to discourage snowbirds and out-of-staters from flocking to their second homes in these counties, states have closed some public recreations sites, as well as public facilities and parking lots.听

Kenneth Johnson, senior demographer at the Carsey School, believes that state and federal responses to the ongoing pandemic should take vulnerable rural populations into considerations. Johnson recently published a brief which found that more than 26% of the non-metropolitan population is over the age of 60. In addition to being of an older age, the study found that听rural Americans have higher incidences of underlying health conditions that may put them at a greater risk of complications from COVID-19.
