Reduce, Reuse, Repeat

When Lauren Banker 鈥13, Alex Freid 鈥13, Emily Spognardi 鈥14, and Erica Vazza 鈥14 walked to the Gables community room in May 2011, they had no idea how much would be donated to their new program, Trash 2 Treasure (T2T). 鈥淲e knew students threw out a lot that could be reused,鈥 says Vazza. 鈥淲e didn鈥檛 know if they would choose to donate it.鈥

When they entered the community room, they were ecstatically overwhelmed by the number of lamps, couches, and other dorm items. 鈥淚t looked like a pawn shop,鈥 says Spognardi.

Hospitals Taking Financial Hit During COVID-19

Most hospitals have temporarily halted elective surgeries and procedures to focus on the current outbreak. This means that the revenue from these services has stopped. At the same time, many hospitals have backed off of their usual bill collection procedures to ease financial pressure on payments, causing another hit to revenue.听According to a report published by the Carsey School, the healthcare and social assistance part of the economy represents 9% of New Hampshire's GDP. Health care and social assistance also accounts for 14% of the states jobs- the largest single employment sector.

Rural Vacation Areas Experiencing High Numbers of COVID-19 Cases

According to Jessica Carson, assistant research professor at the Carsey School, rural counties with a high number of seasonal homes across the U.S. have seen more cases of COVID-19 on average than those with less seasonal housing. The research suggests that rural scenery has drawn visitors seeking to escape densely populated metropolitian areas and听who likely brought the virus with them.听听
